My Youtube top 5 pianists

piano

Returning to the core of this blog, there are a lot of great pianists who publish their work via Youtube. I've composed an inspirational top 5 for you guys. This is highly subjective, and I invite you to send your own top 5 of pianists.

o Dave Thomas: coming from the UK, a real Yann Tiersen lover. In my opinion he's one of the best out there; not only with the piano but also with the accordeon.
I like about all of his videos, but the fact that I'm a Yann Tiersen fan may have something to do with it.

Video example Comptine d'été n. 3 by Yann Tiersen:

o Vika Yermolyeva (Vkgoeswild): A Dutch girl with an alternative style. The way she transcribes metal/rock songs to the piano is unique. Very gifted piano player.

o David Sides: I believe he's about the most famous piano player on Youtube. Very strong versions of mostly R&B songs, which is a bit less my style. Nevertheless, I've got a huge amount of respect for him.

Video example Viva la Vida by Coldplay:

o Hildale: A bit less known, but her Placebo piano covers are absolutely great. But then again, I think Placebo is great.

Video example Song to say goodbye by Placebo:

o Iwillbot: This guy covers a very broad area of music with some songs I really really like. Another nice touch is the fact that he includes lyrics.

In the end, I realize I watch too much instead of playing, wishing I'd be as good as they are. How pathetic :-)

If you know any other examples, feel free to share them!

A lot of people have been asking to add Kyle Landry to this list. So here goes, I especially like this improvisation of Apologize.

  4. in response to what you posted on bluestrawberries,

green and white tea is healthy, but ^.^ i drink a massive amount of sweet tea. I believe it's supposed to be called "black" tea but I call it "red" because well it looks red to me. Actually where i'm from you're weird if you don't have a container of it in your frig.

plus that dutch girl, playing the system of a down, AWESOME! :)

  9. My favorite youtube piano player is doublsh0t, his cover of Muse's Starlight is simply stunning! You should check the video out soon!

  10. You should check out Kyle Landry on YouTube, he's only 18-19yr old and does some absolutely stunning cover/improvisation pieces.

  11. How can you not include kyle Landry. That's shameful. He is the best and most talented of all you've mention. I've listened to David Sides. Why he gets so many viewings is beyond me. He just does simple covers, nothing extraordinary. But if you want to see a truly skilled musical pianist Kyle is the man. He can take a piece of music and make it completely his own, unlike others I've seen on youtube. He should be on your top list

  14. I love youtube, but I don't understand the bit you said about people being greddy or ignorant for not liking illegal downloads. I have worked all my life as a composer and have a family to feed. Since music became free I only get 2 per cent of my income. I'd like to ask you a question and I want you to answer it honestly - Would you work a whole week for no pay?? If not, then you shouldn't expect other people to do so. You pay for plumbers, bread and milk? Or do you expect those free too??

  15. I noticed the sentence saying people are greedy who don't like free downloading, it's a contradiction, in one breath they say bands might get a record contract and in the next breath they say there's no point have a record contract anyway because music is free so you won't get paid. DURRR

  17. There's quite a big difference between products like bread and milk and music. The economics behind the music industry are changing rapidly and ignoring this only hurts the music industry itself. Solely pointing the finger at illegal downloads is indeed ignorant.

  18. check out this guy, I personally feel he is the best pianist on youtube-

  19. Thank you for this list - it lead my to Kyle Landry and Dave Thomas, I am now a big fan.

  20. I also love Andrew Furmanczyk (http://www.youtube.com/user/Lypur?feature=watch) - he has a big section of free tutorials for beginners. Although he is a bit goofy, I have lots of respect for his talent.

  21. It seems there is a big talent arriving.
I just found someone who has a really... special style to play the piano.
He is new but it seems to have a hugo potential.

  22. You can't be serious. Kylelandry is way better than all of those. He cover all types of music, has own improvs and compositions and gives a little of himself in every cover he does. Oh, and he actually cares about sound quality.

Most of the others are just known because they cover popular songs just the way they are. What's the big deal with that?

You should check out Jarrod Radnich also, only two videos but has something special.

  25. What about Adrian Lee??

  26. Adding another vote for marasy8. He's the best youtube pianist from Japan I've seen so far.
